Kate brings back early days jewellery set & Catherine Walker coat for Commonwealth Day

Yesterday was Commonwealth Day, marked by the Royal Family with a service at Westminster Abbey. The Duchess of Cambridge was in attendance alongside The Queen, and chose a red look, bringing back an old coat, and (potentially) repurposing old jewellery into new pieces! Read about the event here.

Kate chose her red and velvet trim Catherine Walker coat seen at Christmas in 2018. It features double breasted velvet buttons from the chest, down to the waist, angled flap pockets, a pointed collar and, cuffs, all in contrasting velvet. The shoulders are squared, while the skirt flares from the waist and is voluminous thanks to pleats.

Her hat was new from Sally Ann Provan, the ‘Sada’ felt hat in berry red with flower and bow trim. The tilted piece features rose-like flowers on the front, and rear underneath the brim, set atop felt twists (supposed to be leaves), all in varying shades of red; it costs £460 here.

She wore her Gianvito Rossi heels in the burgundy or Bordeaux colour. These are the 105mm heel height, featuring a pointed toe, and dark heel cap. Try these.

The Duchess carried a deep pink velvet clutch by Prada; we show the ‘Raso Minaudière’ style in satin below. She also carried a pair of red gloves with bow detail at the wrists, which remain unidentified.

We saw new earrings, which we *think* is the return of a necklace worn in the early days of Kate’s royal life – but this time, as earrings! A circle pave-set stud moves into a tapered bar – again pave set – ending in a small red flower created from six stones (rubies, we suspect) with a clear stone (diamond?) centre. While lovely, we do think these are more evening earrings…

It certainly looks an awful lot like the centre of a necklace we have seen before, thought to be a wedding gift, although the earrings could, of course, simply never have been used so we didn’t know they existed! The demi-parure is from Mouawad. These make a good stud version.

We loved the red look for Kate – a monochromatic palette always works so well for her! What did you think?
